Setting your loot spec as a Paladin in the Shadowlands five man dungeons

Your main armor slots are all coded to drop for any Paladin speciation. Conduits, and Legendary recipes will always drop for you regardless of your loot spec. While shields will drop for both Prot and Holy, Ret, Prot and Holy weapons are typically coded to only drop for that loot spec. One of the challenges of trying to play all three specs is keeping your weapon and trinkets up to date. Each boss drops different items. To maximize your chances at the drop you want, you'll want to set the loot spec for each boss.

Necrotic Wake

  • Blightbone - Prot
  • Amarth - Holy
  • Surgeon Stitchflesh - Holy, if you don't need the shield, then Ret
  • Nalthor the Rimebinder - Holy, if you don't need the trinket, then Ret

Set your loot spec to Protection for the first boss, Blightbone. After you kill Blightbone, set your loot spec to Holy. There's a 1H sword from Amarth, a shield from Surgeon Stitchflesh , and a INT trinket from Nalthor the Rimebinder. Once you have the shield from Surgeon Stitchflesh, you can set your loot spec to Retribution for a STR trinket. Once you have the INT trinket from Nalthor the Rimebinder, you can set your loot spec to Retribution for a 2H sword.

Plaguefall

Set your loot spec to Prot for the whole dungeon.

There's general Plate drops in Plaguefall. Globgrog has a Stamina trinket, which I assume will drop for Protection, but Wowhead doesn't have a loot spec shown for it. Doctor Ickus has a STR Trinket and a 1H STR Mace. Both will drop if your loot spec is Protection. Plaguefall is a  terrible dungeon to run if you're looking for Holy weapons, shields or trinkets.

Mists of Tirna Scithe

  • Ingra Maloch - Holy, if you don't need the trinket, or the mace, then Ret
  • Mistcaller - doesn't matter
  • Tred'ova - Prot

Set your loot spec to Holy for Ingra Maloch. If you don't need the trinket or the 1H mace, you can switch to Retribution for a shot at a 2H axe. Mistcaller just has general Plate drops. Tred'ova has a 1H axe and a shield. Both have a chance to drop if you set your loot spec to Prot.

Halls of Atonement

Set your loot spec to Prot for the whole dungeon.

Echelon has a STR Trinket, and Lord Chamberlain has a STR/MAST trinket. High Adjudicator Aleez has a Haste trinket. Wowhead doesn't currently show what specs these are coded for, but I am speculating all three will drop for Prot. If we find out later that the Haste trinket is set for Holy, then change your loot spec accordingly.

Theater of Pain

  • An Affront to Challengers - Holy, or if you don't need the trinket, Ret
  • Gorechop - Prot
  • Xav the Unfallen - Prot
  • Kul'tharok - Holy
  • Mordretha, the Endless Empress - Prot

An Affront to Challengers and Mordretha, the Endless Empress present interesting choices. Affront has a Ret weapon, or a Holy trinket. Use Prot on Mordretha for a shield or and a STR trinket.

De Other Side Dungeon

  • Hakkar the Soulflayer - Ret
  • The Manastorms - Holy if you need the weapon, Ret if you don't.
  • Dealer Xy'exa - Any
  • Mueh'zala - Any

Hakkar has a 2H sword and a STR trinket. The Manastorms have a STR trinket and a 1H INT Mace. Xy'exa has a strange trinket that looks like it will have INT for Holy and STR for Ret/Prot. Wowhead doesn't say, I would think it will drop for any loot spec. Mueh'zala only has general plate.

Spires of Ascension

  • Kin-Tara - Any
  • Ventunax - Any
  • Oryphrion - Prot
  • Devos - Holy

Spires is a trinket dungeon and quite straightforward. Oryphiron has a STR and a MAS trinket. Devos has an INT trinket.

Sanguine Depths

  • Kryxis the Voracious - Any
  • Executor Tarvold - Holy or Prot
  • Grand Proctor Beryllia - Holy
  • General Kaal - Ret/Prot or Holy

It doesn't matter what you do for Kryxis. Tarvold provides a choice. If you want the INT trinket, set loot spec to Holy. If you don't need it, set your loot spec to Prot for a 1H mace. For Beryllia, use  Holy for a trinket. Kaal is another choice. Ret or Prot gives you a shot at the STR trinket, but Holy gives you a shot at a 1H sword.

There you go. Best of luck as you gear up in these early days of     .
