0/49/12 - The Maintankadin

This is the "Cookie-cutter" Prot spec. 

Advantages

  • Best suited for standard "main tanking"
  • Gets most of the cool stuff in the Prot tree

Disadvantages

  • Not much hybrid left; healing (or DPS) suffers quite a bit

12/35/14 - The Gladiator

The goal of this build is to keep most of the important Prot and Ret talents from the standard 0/49/12 build, but add in uninterruptable healing for PVP and Arena purposes.

Advantages

  • Gives you more survivability and utility in arenas without having to respec
  • Still fairly viable in most "Main Tanking" situations

Disadvantages

  • Requires slightly more defense and avoidance from gear (a little over 1%)
  • Slight threat decrease from the loss of Precision

0/38/23 - The Threat Rocket

Another high-threat build. This build picks up Sanctity Aura and Crusade from the Ret tree to give extra bonuses to damage dealt (and thus, threat). However, some sacrifices from the Prot tree are necessary.

Advantages

  • Probably the highest sustained threat build
  • Improved Sanctity Aura gives benefit to a group when not tanking

Disadvantages

  • Missing a lot of Prot talents, most notably Avenger's Shield
  • Less effective when Sanctity Aura is not an option

37/22/0 - The OT Healadin

This build is primarily a healing build, but gives up some deep Holy talents in favor of picking up some of the more important lower-tier Prot talents. It's not recommended for primary tanking duties, more for primary healers who are called on to off-tank at times, or tank the occasional 5-man.

Advantages

  • Most of the Holy tree is left intact, leaving you a very effective healer.
  • Blessed Life helps reduce incoming damage
  • Holy Shock can be used either as a quick instant heal on yourself or a single-target threat ability

Disadvantages

  • No Holy Shield leaves you open to Crushing Blows
  • Much lower overall threat gen

Hey, Honors long time. I didn't realize you still also write here. Been on Hiatus a long time myself. Played Shadowlands at launch and up to mid-January this year. I canceled my sub at that point and just moved on to other things. I was browsing some old links and was over at BOK when I noticed your link in the sidebar. Decided to hop over and see what was up. Hope all is well Holy Warrior! Just figure I say hello as I stopped by. Just great to see some still keep the writing spirit going all these years later as all our lives change along the way.

I mentioned towards the end of my last post that I would be switching my Hunter from Skinning to Engineering. Well the little caveat I made about not gimping myself turned out to be pretty important. I had a brief Twitter conversation with Fiest the Rogue. If you care about high end PVE raiding, you need to be following @ FiesttheRogue . He is a tremendous resource and very helpful. He gave me a link to an EJ article and explained to me that for melee DPS and Hunters Engineering is not competitive with what is provided by the other professions. Its fantastic for casters apparently, but I'm not a caster. Other classes can get equal STR or INT to the AGI you see here. Tanks have the option for Stamina. Alchemy - mixology (longer, better flasks), Alchemist Stone (special trinket - Mastery), and Flask of Enhancement (special flask +80 AGI) Blacksmithing - socket bracers, gloves (2 extra gems ~=+80 AGI) Enchanting - Ring Enchants (AGI to two rings ~= 80 AGI) Inscription -

Raid Comp Tool

Thanks to Matticus to telling me about this on Twitter. mmo-champion has produced a new Raid Composition tool, you can see it here: http://raidcomp.mmo-champion.com/ On the left you have all 30 'classes'. Every spec of every class is presented. In the center are your groups. I have no idea why they have this set up with 8 groups. You'd only ever see 8 groups (40 players) in AV and you have almost 0 control over the composition in that arena. Then on the right you have the raid buffs, and a count of Healers, Ranged, Melee, and Tanks. You drag the class from the left and drop it on the raid group slot. Your count is increased, and the buffs that you have covered light up in green. Let me pick a class/spec completely at random. Protection Paladin. There. Say you pull over a Protection Paladin and put them in group 1. Back To Basics: The 969 Paladin Threat Rotation

Protection Paladins are one of the last classes in WoW that still have a Rinse and Repeat rotation known affectionately as 969. The 969 rotation was discovered in Wrath of the Lich King Beta by Psiven who then taught it to the rest of the community via Maintankadin. It begins by recognizing that the main Protection Paladin threat moves all come in varieties of 8 to 9 second cooldowns and 6 second cooldowns. We treat the 8 second cooldown moves as 9 seconds to better fit with a 1.5 second global cooldown. The 9s are Judgment (talented), Consecrate and Holy Shield. The 6s are Hammer of the Righteous and Shield of Righteousness. The 9 second and 6 second cooldowns are rotated and alternated. With a 1.5 second global cooldown, this all fits together into a fairly tight rotation. The way this works in practice is that you lead off your threat rotation with a 9 second talented cooldown Judgment.
